Abstract Herbaceous bioenergy plant is one kind of biomass resource, with great development potential in the future. In order to explore the basic data about the fertilizer effect on herbaceous bioenergy plant in marginal lands, the experiment was conducted to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on biomass qualities of switchgrass(Panicum virgatum L.), silverreed [Triarrhena sacchariflora(Maxim.) Nakai] and giantreed(Arundo donax L.) in abandoned sand excavation lands in Beijing suburban areas. Nitrogen fertilizer had no significant effect on the content of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin of switchgrass, and cellulose and lignin of silverreed and giantreed, while significant effect on hemicellulose of silverreed and giantreed. And nitrogen has significant effect on promotion of the biomass yield, the yield of cellulose and hemicellulose, the content and yield of cellulosic biomass of these three kinds of herbaceous bioenergy plant in abandoned sand excavation lands. Therefore,it is feasible to regulate the biomass qualities of herbaceous bioenergy plant through the application of nitrogen fertilizer in marginal lands
